Many of the fixtures on the market have the standard “pinch” connectors to make installing your landscape lights quick and easy. There is no mess, like you may get, when using waterproof pre-filled silicone connectors. There is however; a downside.
After a couple years, dirt may get between the two parts and push the connectors apart. If that happens, your fixture will lose its connection and will not power up. There are a couple things you can do.
Troubleshooting Landscape Lighting System: First, if you are in this situation, simply pull-up the connection, pull them apart, clean them (just scrape away the dirt) and reconnect. In the photos below, I show you a little trick that you can use when installing with these types of connectors.
#1 OpenĀ
#2 Squeeze together
#3 Use pliers to bend the ends
In photo #2 I use my pliers to squeeze the connectors together so metal pincher(s) make good contact with the wire (not in photo) and in photo #3 i bend down the ends of the connectors. This will keep the connection tight and will prevent dirt from pushing the connections apart. If you leave them straight (like photo 2) you run the risk of the dirt eventually pushing them apart.
If doing this does not appeal to you, I would suggest cutting off the pinch connectors (if your fixture has them) and using waterproof connectors instead.
Happy Installation….

Making the transition from halogen to LED (light emitting diodes) is very simple when you use the right product. I’ve been talking about and using the MR16 LED bulb as a replacement for the halogen MR16. The change is easy and the impact is immediate and huge.
I just finished another job where my client has 28 spot lights fixtures on his property. Typically, he changes the halogen bulbs each year at a cost of roughly $500 (bulbs and labor). We went in and changed all 28 spot light bulbs to MR16 L.E.D. bulbs.

(1) His L.E.D. bulbs will last 30,000 hours vs. 2,000 hour halogen.
(2) We removed all 28 halogens at 35 watts each and replaced them with 6 watt LED.
(3) The led requires no maintenance so the $500 a year maintenance is gone
(4) 28 lights x 35 watts = 980 watts
(5) 28 lights x 6 watts = 168
The difference in energy savings is incredible and just one simple change…the upgrade pays for itself in one year.
Simply remove the old halogen and plug in the LED MR16 (must be a sealed fixture and 12v systems only).
