Quick Tips: Landscape Lighting Design
The first step in lighting design is to identify areas important to you; the outdoor living spaces you enjoy and the unique details of your home exterior and landscaping.
- Take a walk around and think about the spaces you enjoy during the day; this will help you decide what you’d also like to enjoy during the evening.
- Consider points of interest (i.e., fountains, favorite trees, colorful artwork, sculptures, water features, etc.)
Perform a Safety walk
- consider walkways to ensure you properly light steps and hazardous areas.
- pathways
- driveways
Tool: Use irrigation flags to mark the areas you decide to illuminate.
If you spend time doing this basic walk, you will see your vision realized. Setting the expectation at this stage will ensure a successful project.

Already, the word is in and sales on LED Holiday lights are way up! Many believe the boost in LED lights for the holidays is a great lead in for other LED products now available on the market. While it is true that LED lights are at least 80% more efficient than incandescent, not all LEDs are alike. The downside of holiday led lights as a lead-in or introduction is the quality and pricing can be deceiving.
Holiday lights are not made to last, therefore, they are offered at a reduced cost. When you transition to other LED products (like LED landscape lights) you will likely pay a bit more but you’ll receive better quality products, built to last a very long time (35,000-50,000 hours on average). Overall, LEDs are the new way to go in energy efficient lighting and I’m happy to offer incredible products on the new edge of technology and energy efficient lighting products.
